Blizzard and PayPal Party Up Against Gold Sellers

I read this news today. it looks like new. now will be too complicated to sell. : (have to be careful ..

The buying and selling of virtual currency in MMOs has been around almost as long as the genre itself, however an easy way to transfer money between parties has not. PayPal is probably the number one way in which these transactions go down, and now Blizzard has teamed up with the popular service to put a stop to transactions to known sellers of World of Warcraft gold.

They are sending out a notice to anyone who?s PayPal account is flagged, telling them that their actions are violations of Blizzard?s intellectual property. While the legality of this is kind of a gray area at this point in time, private companies like Blizzard and PayPal can indeed control who does what on their services, and if they have partied up, so to speak, against gold sellers, this could be a huge blow to that business.

Blizzard hasn?t had the best of luck recently with intellectual property suits, even losing one in the case of the 3rd party program Glider. Of course, this didn?t have anything to do with in-game assets, which is the opposite when it comes to gold buying/selling. It?s always nice to see action being taken against those who attempt to screw with the in-game economy, but whether it will amount to anything in the grand scheme of things is anyone?s guess.

I can't understand why on earth PayPal would do as they stand to lose out substantially:confused:

Yes, but as a few folks have said, Blizz now allows people to pay for their monthly payments through Paypal and I am sure that alot, and I mean alot, of people use this feature as a prefered payment method. This was no lightly reached agreement between the two parties and I am sure substantial dollars are involved there. Better for Paypal to throw in with Blizz against the gold sellers and retain the larger customer exposure with monthly fees than go against them and risk loosing that business.

Most gold sellers will find a way around any barriers that are thrown up or simply switch to a new method of payment. There are limits to the controls that can be put into place, both legal and otherwise. Hell, as long as you dont call the transaction WOW Gold Sales or anything similar, who is to really know what the payment is for.

All this is going to do is push more traffic towards private sellers rather than major sites.

Because I imagine paypal makes more on WoW subs than they do from gold selling. Keep in mind, paypal is an official way to subscribe to WoW.

I just find it hard to believe that these people have such hard-ons for "getting" botters and gold sellers. When I bot I don't bother anyone. I don't ninja nodes, I don't ninja skin, I don't ninja herbs, nor do I ninja kills. If I'm grinding I'm doing it in out-of-the-way places where no one goes, etc. So, I really don't see why Blizzard are pissing themselves over what botters do. We pay their fees to play the game our way. If the player doesn't want to manually go from 1 to 85 by questing, instances, or whatever then they should be able to pick up a third party app and have it grind the hell out of mobs to get to 85. It only sets the player back since they don't get the rep they would from doing quests.

Now, I can understand screwing up the in-game economy because that just pisses me off. Sell to private buyers and don't flood the AH so that others aren't able to make a profit, too. Post a little bit up, make a toon with two crafting professions, make some things, post those. Do constructive things with your farmed goods. Don't crash the AH with it.

I just hate these "holier than thou" zealous anti-botting campaign crusaders that try and make a botter's life a living hell. Why? We're not hurting anyone by doing what we do. So we level the lazy way and you didn't think about doing it. Get over it, go buy a bot, and make a toon and shut the hell up.

How does paypal make money from subs? Other than blizz paying them to allow payments?

I can assure you that PayPal make far far far more revenue from RMT than WoW subscriptions.

You just named the biggie...Blizz pays them to allow subscriptions...and it is a LARGE account. Coupled with the additional number of people that will now visit the Paypal home page to create a new account where they will see adverts, use their new paypal account to pay for other things, etc. this generates a large amount of business for Paypal.

I'm not sure what to make out of this. In a way this could be a bad thing for Paypal. But also a good thing.

Gold sellers with a business account paypal normally pay a percentage of their sales to paypal. Which is how they make money (If i'm not mistaken). So if they cut off major companies from paypal they lose a portion of their income.

But, if they don't agree with Blizzard..Blizzard could threaten paypal by cutting them loose. And Blizzard is huge. And I'm sure a lot of people use the paypal method. And if they lose Blizzard they lose the steady income. Compared to the iffy ones from gold sellers.

We'll just have to see how this plays out.

Oh I hope this unition between blizz and paypal goes no where :(

With the fact that Paypal is already complying, it means that it already *HAS* gone somewhere and will continue to go somewhere.

Just like any business Paypal has obviously looked at the comparison between the money they get from Blizzard accounts and the money they get from "gold transactions" and the Blizzard option nets them the most money. Simple business economy.

Oh, and for people that keep talking about the "legal" aspects of Paypal or Blizzard doing this... It is all legal. They are two private businesses that can 100% control who uses their services and for what reasons.

They don't even have a chance to tell Paypal "Don't do anything with this kind of people".
I don't even understand, why it is illegal to sell/buy gold. I just pay for the time the person had to farm this gold. But I know, that are their Terms ...

Blizzard is a fucking shit for Paypal. It isn't even a payment choice for wow customers.
Ebay for example is HUGE for Paypal.

Its not illegal to sell gold. Its against the games T&C which you agreed to, which is why they're allowed to suspend/cancel accounts (you agreed to their rules and as such their punishments basically). In this case, Paypal are just agreeing to help Blizzard out on that (because no doubt they see a benefit in it). Illegal means breaking the law. Selling gold isn't breaking a law, its breaking an agreement.

Fuking paypal! They have closed 3 of my verified accounts and are holding the money within them for 180 days. I dont get how they work they have no right to hold my money let alone close my accounts STRAIGHT after i put money into them. and its not like the companys im selling are doing anything wrong they pay for what they get and never do call backs so fuk paypal everyone got moneybookers imo at least they treat u better
