That's the way Simplefollow works. If you want your follower to not die so easy, better try boostme plugin. It's better for your purposes. When your follower is high level and gear, you can com back to simplefollow. Look for boostme in the plugins section on this forum.

Level your character through adventure mode, with adventurer plugin and profile. When you're high level, you could complete acts from story mode in a breeze... Nobody is doing story profiles because is higly inneficient.
