Honorbuddy - Wiki Profiles Project (1-80 Leveling, Questing, and more)

We have just started a brand new experimental project which I hope you will all participate in!

At the moment, we only have the basic framework in place, but the idea is essentially this:

  • Everyone works together using the wiki methodology to build profiles which are stable and reliable for leveling via questing/grinding (as well as other specialty profiles such as rep and farming).
  • Any member can submit edits and bug fixes.
  • Edit history is stored and can be rolled back. Any idiots who repeatedly submit faulty or prank edits will be banned.
  • Stable builds of the different profiles will be added here to forums on a regular basis so people can easily download the latest versions of the profiles as well as discuss and keep track of the various updates.

Note: The wiki is not intended to replace the existing forum full of profiles or the current method of handling profiles. It is simply intended as a supplement. If you don't want to use the wiki or the wiki-built profiles, then don't.

The wiki is merely a place where people can truly collaborate together on community-owned profiles. If something is broken, fix it! There's no need to post logs on a forum and wait on the original author to figure things out. Just fix it yourself, and everyone benefits!

At the moment, we are perusing candidates for initial starter builds for the different factions/races. A generic starter build that works for all races and character classes for each faction (horde/alliance) would be ideal. If you have an exceptional profile that you would like to share, please let us know! Contributors of initial starter profiles will be given assistant admin abilities on the wiki.

/sigh my name is already taken :(

_Nuok will have todo i guess

I saw that, cheers

Are we for or against posting existing profiles from the forums? Don't wanna upset any profile authors, but most profiles I've used at home so far I've had to fix and update vendor and mailbox locations...

I think that any starter profiles that are used on the wiki should preferably be approved for use by their original authors (and credit should be given in the initial description regardless) before they are posted. Ideally, I would like for the original authors to actually be on board with the project as editors and/or admins if at all possible. With that said, I realize that it is inevitable that tons of changes (by multiple people) will occur to a profile over time (potentially rendering it unrecognizable from its original state), so it doesn't make sense for all the credit in the end to go to just the original author.

The ultimate goal is for these wiki profiles to be owned by the entire community. If it is absolutely necessary for egos to be stroked, then so be it, but I would prefer if everyone just helped out without having to have all the credit.

The nature of wikis is that editing history is stored, however, so technically speaking, if someone wants to see the "credits" for a profile, all they have to do is look at its edit history.

Sounds like a great idea, especially for those wanting to learn to develop a profile by working on an existing project.

One thing I will mention however is the incoming changes to how questing profiles can/will be made, check out MaiN's blog post.

Ah, yes, that is a good point, and I actually had this exact issue in mind when I came up with the idea of a wiki. If you have a whole group of multiple people working together on a profile, new features and specifications might be implemented much sooner than if only one person is working on that profile.

I am in this as well. A wiki is a much better tool to use when it comes to things like profile creation / improvements.

I personally have added public profiles made here onto the wiki, but have left credit as well as have made many minor improvements to each.

Really guys, this is how we should be sharing and improving each other's profiles AS A COMMUNITY, so let's start transitioning towards this wiki!

Already we have a Neutral 70-80 profile made up.

Imho, no.
We have profile sections here. Why use a 3rd party site? Maybe the profile section can be broken down or made better, and even cleaned, but still. Work as a community here, not somewhere else.

Also this is the wrong section to post in... This is for profiles only, this should be in General Discussion.

I am going to have to vote no on this also....

There is things you can do in a profile that makes it say HEY LOOKIE ME IMA BOT!!!!

Ok now that that is common knowledge... Who is the LARGEST "REPORTER" of botters?
other botters... particualy others on the same bot because they know what to look for.

So any time a random user101 is able to make a edit to profile outside of these forums, were they can and will be bann'd from the use of there purchase, is a bad idea IMO.

I am not saying these forums are best option. I personally dont like the lay out but ya know. Over all the forums are great just a few things that could be tweak'd

IF this is a matter of learning how to do a profile it is CAKE!!!! download some common profiles and the API and just go over them for a hour or 2... 4-5 with a learning disability and BOOM your now a proficient profile maker.

Thats sounds good, BUT i?m a Buddy-Community-User, not a wiki :P

Perhaps not just anyone should be allowed in? After all anyone who uses this will be putting their account at risk. Perhaps a bunch of us could get together and do 'scene releases' so to speak :p That way the group gets credit, not individual coders (for lack of better word)

Thank you very much for starting this.
It's the best possible improvement for the profile community at the moment.
I'll be sure to contribute.

EDIT: I looked around a bit and I think you should split up the whole thing with profiles that quest and profiles that don't.

As to the potential security problems, yes, we will probably end up having to lock it down eventually so not just anyone can make edits, but for now (while it's in it's baby stages) I am going to try leaving it open.

Even still now, you must become a member to edit it. And all edits can be reversed immediately.

This isn't an "out-of-hb-community" type of deal. This allows the community to unite even more with each other, and easier than the current setup.

This is just like the bugtracker is. A tool dedicated to what it is used for, as opposed to how bug reports used to be on the forums.
I like the "scene release" concept. And will support that. Currently I sign any profile I edit/touch with a <!-- Improved by honorbuddyprofiles.wikidot.com --> at the top.

I have made this change per your request. Don't forget that you can make changes to the wiki, too!
