<chuckles> you guys need to chill a bit. :D Let's not make this personal.

Yes, the MAC address never leaves the local network.

But...
It is possible for the WoWclient to read the MAC address of the machine on which its running, and periodically send that information to the WoWserver-side session manager captured in a WoW data packet (unlike the IP packets the MAC address is normally used in). This is how the MAC address might be associated with your session/machine, not because it escapes the network as part of the IP datagram.

You'd have to pull out WireShark or something and examine the escaping WoW data packets to see whether or not this was actually being done. This is just but one form of data-mining that Bliz has at their disposal where they can perform WoWserver-side only analysis to catch botters, if they wanted to.

Just another spin,
chinajade

I've checked it over and over and this proves to be untrue, or they are not yet reading mac addresses at this current time

Just stop arguing because you are wrong.

The Blizzard system check finds the mac address

No it does not, Seriously before arguing with someone, seriously check it out.

MAC addresses cannot be traced as they only are used on a local network basis. Blizzard's servers will only see their gateway's MAC address as the "source" address in the packet. The source and destination MAC addresses in the frame / packet are always stripped away and rewritten with the corresponding values. However the source IP section will still show your external IP unless used through a *** or ***** set up for the specific ports.

You underestimate warden.

Warden only reads it's name space and nothing more, you're obviously clueless, It's illegal for them to read any other name spaces, and if warden did read other name spaces I'm pretty sure there would be a major class action lawsuit hitting blizzard right now, but there isn't

Hi, ChuckLee,

The way we're talking about MAC addresses here, they are not being used for routing purposes, but being (easily) captured by an application and misused for identification purposes. The MAC addresses we're discussing are not the ones found in the IP packets source-MAC and destination-MAC fields.

If the WoWclient is capturing and sending the MAC address, it would be the MAC address of the machine that was running the WoWclient, and not the gateway. MAC addresses used this way are not used for routing purposes at all--strictly for identification purposes. And MAC addresses are unique throughout all of space and time, unless you intentionally modify them.

Bliz could also encrypt (even lightly) that part of the WoW data packet, so it wouldn't be obvious that's what they were doing. Thus, the casual developer inspecting Wireshark captures might not recognize them for what they are. I seriously doubt anyone in our Community has done this kind of analysis, except perhaps Apoc.

A MAC address is considered hardware--and not protected by 'privacy' laws. Bliz has the right to read a MAC address, just as it has the right to read your Video resolution. It may be deemed necessary to the basic operation of the program. Of course, doing so would be considered Bliz over-reach by many, including me. But, your only recourse is to sue about a very questionable 'design decision', and a court ruling could fall either way--based on testimony of the experts.

cheers,
chinajade

I?m arguing for a point, I know perfectly well what I am talking about here, and obviously not going to let anyone tell me otherwise, I work in this every day for 12 hours per day, my point still stands

Mac Address is software side, a hardware address is hardware two different things. and a Mac address is intended to be private and not be seen

HAHAHAHH. So wrong.

You obviously don't work on servers all day.

You obviously have no idea, I'm actually going to ignore your comments going forward, I would rather not argue with a child

Oh PS. Get Apoc to confirm my findings..

You are the child here because you know nothing.

PS: Learn more about networking before talking

I know perfectly well what I am talking about, I'm not the one that is posting every topic an insulting comment thinking I'm the internet tough guy, gg lolz

Guess you cant ignore my comments.

You obviously don't know what you are talking about. Gives some links to your facts, and I will agree with you.

You obviously don’t have any idea before you need me to link things, knowledge is power my friend, if you need to find anything out I’d prefer if you searched Google before becoming a moron, so learn something at school, or search Google please.
You would know all of this if you were working at Microsoft, but like I’ve previously stated Microsoft hires more intelligent people than you.

This is getting interesting, when do the boxing gloves come out? I am getting excited the tension is so thick here.

You cannot fix stupid either i learned that a long time ago. So watching is just better

You cant link it because its not true and you know nothing. You should follow your own advice and go back to school.

You just keep looking like an idiot the more you post.

"MAC addresses are most often assigned by the manufacturer of a network interface card (NIC) and are stored in its hardware,"

- MAC address - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

and your point being? Because it's stored in Hardware it's hardware? Once again, try again.

Hardware is a physical item
