Why is the value of Gold going up?

I too have been wondering about that, here's a few random ideas.

Everyone is trying to cash out before the AH closure. How can you cash out? - sell for gold or for currency. Most of the trading is probably going on in the form of items->gold->currency. This means item prices go down as the market gets saturated and gold prices go up. As to who keeps buying the gold if it's desirable to cash out instead, I think it's a combination of many factors: 1) Fat and nerdy Diablo whiz-kids like this guy: Let's Auction! Ep. 1: Preparing for Reaper of Souls - Introduction - YouTube are themselves hoarding gold in preparation for RoS and recommending hoarding it to others. I don't really get why he's doing it, since gold should be much more abundant in RoS, but then again I'm not in the private beta and don't know things he does and it could also be a Machiavellian scheme to drive gold prices up and then sell it himself for more profit, which is doubtful. 2) The general media hype about RoS is making more people boot up Diablo after a long time, increasing demand for everything ever so slightly, but since they also tend to buy gold, it drives the gold/currency ratio up even more. 3) There are people out there who have ideas as to what will be valuable in RoS and they are buying up some specific items and need lots of gold to do it. Said fat whiz-kid has hinted that RoS will not have a decent replacement for Mempo and Witching Hour, this creates a speculation opportunity. It stands to reason items that don't have good replacements in RoS will be MANY valuable, especially in the first few weeks.

My guess is that gold will crash in the final days of the AH since so many people will want to get rid of every last coin. Then again, you never know. That's why I'm steadily selling gold for the offering price and not crying over it being slightly more expensive the next day.
 
Good point there, you wrote exactly what i thought about what's going on with gold prices. It's unfortunate that i sold all my gold few months ago and back than i thought that many people will return before RoS comes out and that gold price will skyrocket so i should gather all my gold and save it for that moment. But also my thoughts back than were " what if i get banned and lose all my gold?".
Anyway: no risk, no profit.

I believe it was already stated by someone in another thread that gold is BoA only for beta testing.
Anyway, Blizz never said that in expansion gold will be bound to account so...
 
Prices are going up because people are returning to the game and preparing their characters for the expansion. That increases demand. Supply is artificially low, compared to recent history, because Blizzard banned so many of the botters. The new equilibrium is higher.
 
There were some big banwaves on china farms 2 weeks ago and this time they did not rebuild their farms so close to RoS. also increased demand from people coming back from the game boosts price a bit.
 
AngelsHalo, are you sure that the gold won't be boa in ros? There is an opinion that it can be bound because players cannot trade in PTR (and gold was not bound in PRT before) and it there was a blue post that bliz likes how everything is working on PTR.

It will definitely be BoA it has been announced several times.
 
AngelsHalo, do you think there will be anything worth botting with boa gold? Especially with the really high price of addon key.
 
Who do you guys sell gold too? Ive been dealing with MMOFLY888 for over a year and yesterday he just took 200k form me and never paid. Id like to keep botting, but I'm having a very hard time selling my gold :( Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Hell, I'll pay for a good selling source

I just don't see anything being worth botting for $, only self gain at this time. Maybe someone smarter than me has figured out a system. But as of now, I've cleaned out my farm in anticipation of 2.0.1 patch in a few hours. Its a very sad time because the gravy train is over... losing $300-1000 a month is gonna be tough.
