Star helm is on the list of items that can not be salvaged so they just pile up. Is it possible to make them get dropped or not picked up

Yes! the latest dev build has an option 'Pickup Transmog Whites' and they are being salvaged.
However I've been asked for them to be kept because you can trade them with your other chars to share the transmogrify, so ill either add a setting to stash for it or maybe just keep only one of each type in the stash.
