What is an SVN?

When I look at some of the profiles here on the forums they keep talking about an SVN and I was wondering what it is and if it is helpful.

SVN is a program that allows you to sync a folder on your computer with an online database. Syncing your folder with the database will allow your folder to update anytime there is a file update on the database.
