In short: SVN "profiles" simply allow a quicker-more-direct means of acquiring the latest builds from the developer; I would not say they're "better", per se, but it is a convenience.

Very convenient - worth the time to use it properly. Good if you get into editing others work. It enables you to keep merging with the authors updates.
