I have a Protected Items.xml in my HB folder that contains protected items. How come almost all profiles also have a list of protected items? Is there a need to have the protected items in the profile if I have a protected items.xml?

Sorry for the delayed response, we were traveling the past day.

Inexperienced profile writers frequently make the mistake of including a <ProtectedItems> element in the profile. You can find a lot more information about it here...
[wiki]HonorBuddy: About Protected Items[/wiki]
[wiki]HB Profile Writing: A prototypical ProtectedItems Element[/wiki]
[wiki]Honorbuddy Profile Tag: ProtectedItems[/wiki]

In short, including a <ProtectedItems> element in a profile makes no sense whatsoever, with one exception. That exception is a questing profile that needs to prevent certain commonly-available items from being sold. A good example of this was the pre-Cataclysm Westfall Stew quest that requires common items that drop off mobs. If a <ProtectedItems> is included in a profile, it should protect only the quest items, and nothing else. (The post-Cataclysm 'Westfall Stew' quest items are now flagged as "Quest Items", and no longer require protecting.)

A <ProtectedItems> element encountered in a profile is merged with the contents of the ProtectedItems.xml file. Honorbuddy uses the combined list.

When a profile writer includes a <ProtectedItems> element for any other reason, its usually out of ignorance or obstinance. With the one exception noted above, the responsibility and decision making process of what items to protect belongs with the user--not the profile writer.
