I was using 3 bots on 3 accounts. One was my main account. I was leveling on two of the accounts and I was using gather buddy on my main account. On the two leveler accounts I was running a standard 68-80 questing profile. Long story short, I had them all running on my machine at once. The only account that was banned was my main account of 10 years that I hand leveled 22 90s.
They permanently banned me. Got the account reduced to a 72 hr suspension. Told them that they were incorrect and that I was hacked. Other two accounts were fine and are still leveling as I type. So this what I can see through deductive reasoning.
They obviously don't scan the computer you are using or else my other accounts would be toasted. The other thing I noticed is that when I ran gather buddy for hours on end and processed my mats, I was able to bot for a while. It became a problem when I started posting the raw mats in large quantities on the auction house. Lastly and most importantly, player reports are the only thing that seem to be a botters "worst enemy".
In closing, my personal experience yielded that the human factor of people reporting you is the only culprit. Revert to common sense. Avoid posting in large numbers, stick to areas of low population, and process your mats before turning it into currency. No large posts and most importantly. Always, always, always... Deny deny deny!
Good luck guys.
