Due to the amount of players contacting Niantic about bans and not able to login, they have posted this.

Submit a ban appeal – Pokemon GO



Here is the reddit subforum for this by the #PokemonGoDev team,

Now everyone shut up, stop posting and spreading rumors, and wait for official word about what this all is......

Yes i got my lvl 40 acc banned today :(
 
This is not kill confirmed.

Players that are suicide botting their accounts to level 35+ aren't getting banned either. If you do not bot in moderation then you will have your account reset without notice. So far, extended softbans are the only thing in play. Permanent bans are COMING, so this is a pre-emptive move from Niantic because they estimate a massive number of botters getting banned.

You do not know any of that... Just because people are still botting and are not banned, does not mean that Niantic did not flag accounts based on certain criteria and ban them, while others escaped, for now.... All we know so far is that some people have not been able to log into their accounts for 16+ hours now, and this is happening when they try to log into any platform.......... And now Niantic has posted about appealing bans for cheating... These are the ONLY facts.. Stop spewing your false comments about "extended soft bans".... You have no idea that this is what that is. "If you bot 24/7 you will have your account reset without notice".... LOL you talk like you know things but have no idea.
 
This is what you get if you bot 24/7...Derp.

Bot less than 10 hours a day, in the same place (or change continents once a week or so) and you'll have no issues.

All I said was you will get banned if you don't bot smart.
