Just coming back need help deciding: Shaman or Monk

Hey all,

I took an extended break from raiding and decided to get back into it, my old guild has agreed to carry me to get HFC gear but I cant decide on what class to play. My two options are elemental shaman or windwalker monk. Anyone with current raiding experience could share their experience on which is "better," mainly in terms of DPS (I would rarely offheal so that isn't a concern). I know that is a loaded question but any advice is appreciated and it will ultimately boil down to what I enjoy the most.

It's really up to what you like playing more. Both have good dps potential, monk, I believe is a little better. The questions you need to ask are:

1. Do you want to tank in the future?
2. Do you want to be a caster?
3. Which class looks better to you in legion?
4. If you're going to bot them, which one has better CR's for raiding?

At this point in the game, it doesn't really matter what you play. My best suggestion is level them both and then choose. You may end up hating both classes. Being pigeonholed into a class you hate is a sure way to hop on the fast track to an extended break again.

I would go with Monk but that is just MY preference. You can do anything with a Monk...Tank, DPS, and heal

That's exactly why I mentioned both tanking or caster. Which do you like more? Which do you see yourself doing in the future?

I just got back to WoW, and I have to say ive rolled 2 monks and LOVE them...

Mythic monk tank here.

Absolutely, all monk specs are pretty fun -and in demand. I would say the Monk tank spec, Brewmaster, is insanely fun and in a unique position to handle many Raid mechanics. DPS as Brewmaster is also very good especially AoE and even in Ashran you can dominate easily. The Brewmaster is also pretty quick, mobile and well suited to soloing old Raids and current content alike.

Monks have 3 strong specs, and with tri-spec being a thing in Legion it is a great choice going into the next expansion!
