In my line of work, I've seen comparable stories life yours in which the individual learns his craft from the "other side of the coin". In the end, they get hired for their passion and willingness to think outside the box.

That guide right there. Helped me get a project setup and ready for coding. I didn't do the custom class thing though.
Got it all setup then played around with the api for hours and hours making little plugins.
