You apparently missed the part of verifying that the purchase keys are actively used on the authentication servers. Do you really think Blizzard would make purchases and bot in their own game to gain access to these forums? Perhaps. But it sure would be a pain in the ass for them.

Why wouldn't Blizzard just wait, bide their time, and issue a ban wave again, leaving no idea when the data was collected or how?

I think BL will find that little bug that f***ed us all in blizz code, but that'll take some time as well they improve client side part of Tripware and take logging and archiving each and every change in Warden and friends serously.
But beeng software engineer(not in Blizz or BL) i understand that reputation risk which comes from release of unsecure version for suicide dungeoners or farmers with more advanced logging and telemetry and autosending to BL that info. They was relaxed by 5 years without banwaves while in mine they should have this "plan B" in case of that situation and release it next day. Not to say that can be fatality for "casual botters" as i'm for example that made a fantastic profits from Buddy Store.
As well I imagine that hack team of Blizz use HB daily for fun and profit. Also Blizz banwaves seems to be not sticked to their new security releases but to economic and legal reasons.

As I've mentioned, there is a plenty of botters that don't care about bans at all because they already get ban in term of week or two with no banwaves for farm dungeons in 5 team 24/7. Let them to be a polygon for testing for a bit. Not even mentioning Blizz fans on their forums that'll quickly realize that banwaves just not effective and BGs and dungeons filled again by bots in days even they'll be banned next week.
That quickly lead Blizz to unobscure their security bringing it online again and be catched by BL. Gotcha!
