How do you keep track of new profiles, plugins, etc

Firstly you find the ones essential to you, Routines included.
You'll find most are maintained via autonomous updates by SVN, which at least means you do not have to check the forums so much; you just use SVN to keep yourself updated.
Try and keep your plugins streamlined and not use too many. Keep it to the essentials.
For profiles, well yes if you rely on others' then take your time in the forums and their respective posts; because it is very well worth your time keeping appraised of their bugs and developments!
