How do loot logs work?

I was just looking through my logs and was a little unclear on how they work.

When does a new log get created? When I hit start/stop, or when I close DB down fully.

Is it best to close DB down everytime I am manually playing D3, and start a new session so I get a new log?

DB creates a new log file on every startup

once its up and running it will keep logging stuff
