For sure way to have main account not banned if botting on alt?

Made an alt account specifically for botting, however I really do not want to lose what is on my main. What are ways to keep this from happening? Would me running a virtual computer with different mac and IP from *** work? I've heard that ***'s can still be detected and linked back to your actual IP though. Is this true, and if so, what is a WORKING alternative? Thanks!
