Okay, some notes on this...
1. I performed a clean install of DB, so all plugins were disabled. DB
did not crash. For what it's worth, D3 is running in basic Windowed Mode, and I have all the prerequisites (.NET et al) installed.
2. I clicked on Trinity (v3.0.6.24) without selecting it in the plugins tab, at which point the warning about Desktop Composition being disabled flashed up. Incidentally, Win7 services insists said desktop composition is running (Status: Started).
3. Doing #2 for the Adventurer and Quest Tools plugins gave no warning.
4. I enabled Quest Tools (v3.5.4). No crash.
5. I disabled Quest Tools, enabled Adventurer (v1.0.0.73). No crash.
6. I have both Quest Tools & Adventurer plugins loaded. No crash.
7. I disable both the above plugins. No crash.
8. I enable Trinity. DB crashes immediately. The DB window shows only:

My log file shows only this from the point immediately after #7 above:
