Been having a wierd problem trying to get setup with RoS ..

in vanilla I had several VMs running in vmware workstation 9, each with one instance of diablo, running a stripped down version of windows 7.

since the big RoS patch (2.0.1 I think), i can't get diablo to start in the VM. The program launches, but it just gives a blank window instead of showing the login/hero select screen.

tried a lot of different things to get it to work:

- install fresh version of win7 (home/pro)
- use virtualbox instead of vmware
- clean download/install of d3

but only way i could get back up and running was to use windows xp inside a vm. Definitely not ideal, xp is showing its age and runs like a dog.

anyone else managed to get ros working in a VM? care to share how you set it up??

If you can hear Diablo music while you are having black screen, that is Vertical Sync problem.

What you need to do is; go to start button on the left corner of your desktop, then go to your personal folder ( usually your name appears on the top of right side column), double click My Documents folder - DiabloIII folder, then you will see D3prefers, you need to right click and open with Notepad or similar program.
Find a line Vsync "0". Change the value "0" to "1".
It should fix black screen caused by out of Vsync.

However, if your problem caused by Nvidia or ATI Graphic card, it will not fix black screen problem. I don't know that kind of black screen problem. Actually I am having those black screen problem while bot is running.

thanks for the tips man i will definitely try this.

I know the black screen problem, and yeah it's different. I found the black screen problem with vmware workstation 9 and nvidia. with ATI graphics card it always worked fine. It was intermittent for me though, and would go away for days at a time.

i did quite a bit of research on the net about it, and seemed like it was a fairly common problem with workstation. You could try workstation 10 and see if that works better, or possibly roll back to 8 and try that. But I think we're at the mercy of vmware with that problem

I downloaded the latest VMWare, set it up with W7 64bit and updated it, works fine aside from the occasional VM crashing.

1. Go to Nvidia control panel and under 'set PhysX configuration' set the PhysX processor to your GPU.
2. Go to manage 3D settings and under power management mode, select 'prefer maximum performance'.

If it was intermittent problem, then it is definitely not "Vsync" issue. You should follow s1ls ' suggestion or phoretis' suggestion.
I followed phoretis' suggestion and so far it is working good
