Generator monk is indeed the best monk build for higher GRifts.

Unfortunately, after the double nerf to the Static Charge monk, the class went from the best to the worst at GRifts. Blizzard just didn't replace that build with anything close to it.

Case in point, here is the spread on the Season 5 Leaderboard:
Top Crusader is at 91, Top 1000 is 80.
Top Wizard is 89, Top 1000 is 78.
Top Barbarian is 88, Top 1000 is 74.
Top WD is 87, Top 1000 is 75.
Top Demon Hunter is 84, Top 1000 is 74.
Top Monk is 86, Top 1000 is 71.

I would say the popularity of the builds revolves around the best classes for the patch. You see most of our community focusing on Wizard and Crusader builds. This is where all of the time and effort is going when guides are made, settings are posted, etc.

I run a multi-bot setup so I can't give you a ton of sage advice on how far it can be pushed in Solo. Last time I ran it, I did a 68 to bump my blood shard cap up and didn't try again. What I will tell you is that I am slowly giving up on the class for 2.4. It's a support class for me at this point. And I am about to roll a WD or Crusader on that account to replace it.

Monk is still good for speed farming, but top end GRifts are tough for all monks, as evidenced by the disparity at the top level:
Crusader 91/80 compared to Monks 86/71.

I hate to say it because I have loved Monk since before RoS, but it's time to roll another class if high GRifts is your goal.

Yeah, you're right about Monk being weakest in high grifts. But this class does have alot of versatility in high grift builds: inna ally/pets, tempest rush/palm, inna generator, sunwuko torch, etc. There are like 5+ builds that did grift 80+. All of them seem really close. What other class can say that? This is what I like most about monk. And they even can play support for 100+ grifts. I got like 30k DB's and 15k souls with all the materials. I could easely make a crusader, but looking at thorns, it just seems so boring. Dont really like this class. I liked the sweeper builds, but its just so much weaker. Monk is also the least explored class. And only recently a new build came out that combined palm with water ally proc+CoE water for massive explosion damage doing 85+. I do play Wizard however. But DMO also struggles at around 74, with very inconsistant finishing times. I kinda want to stay with monk/wiz for high grifts.

Also interesting to see is that on EU, Wiz is strongest class that cleared a 92. While crusader stuck at 90.

I started 2.4 with a Monk as it was the class I preferred in previous seasons. With the Generator build I ended up clearing GR72 with the bot but that was pretty much the limit. I've not tested it since gaining another 600 paragon levels or perfecting gear so perhaps GR73/74 would be possible. (I might actually have a go later and see what I can push too).

In contrast I rolled a DMO wiz and a LoNSader and both can clear GR75 with ease.

I switched my Monk to Inna/Ally build and I was doing GR 72's with 3-5 mins left.

Paragon level 14XX, 3.2M dps unbuffed standing at town.

All Ancient gear plus augmentations.
