I've thought a lot about this problem from outside the view of just Archebuddy and here's what I've concluded:
Generally speaking, unless you abuse it and become the "Land Baron" type that is obviously hoarding land, I don't think they are, or have ever even intended to ban scarecrow farmers.
My logic:
After a few months of playing this game and owning a 8x8 then a 16x16 i slowly began to realize I wasnt making it anywhere by planting my own farms with rice, corn, etc etc. The profit / labor was good but the time it took wasnt worth the meager gold I was spending. I moved onto running my own merchant ships to freed with some friends and started making 1-2k / day, i concluded farming land was for the OCD, insane, people with literally nothing better to do, or are just plain stupid and will never have enough gold to compete in this game.
But then, what about the economy? Grains fuel tradepacks and plants like rice and corn fuel crafting armor and weapons. Bundles are completely inefficient, and if you look around the game, MANY farms are planted with single plants.
The only logical conclusion is that in order to keep the economy moving in a way that doesnt stagnate the endgame players (people who have long since stopped doing petty things like farming rice and corn) the game MUST have a class of players that continues to do these functions. However, in the natural evolution of any MMO, new plays are quickly outnumbered by existing players and slowly become non existant. Yet there are still thousands of corn and rice for sale years into the game life. And we can all agree I think that the population is shrinking, not growing. So who is planting the rice and corn?
Bots. And why are they not banned? Becuase if they banned them all, they woud lose potentially THOUSANDS of patron-paying accounts, and the entire economy would collapse, and when people who want to craft realize they need to start planting rice and corn to do it, they'll quit and go to a different game that doesn't give them carpel tunnel syndrome.
Simply speaking, Trion can't afford to ban the scarecrow farmers.
Edit: This doesn't mean logging into AB is safe. If they are blanket banning people who log in through the AB client then it's not gonna save your ass. I'm just saying that generally speaking unless someone reports you for farming, and a GM bothers to investigate you, they aren't after us.
A little deeper:
Scarecrow farming DELETES gold from the economy. You buy seeds and saplings which removes gold completely. This causes DEFLATION and is GOOD for a healthy MMO economy.
Coinpurse farming and mob farming CREATES gold into the economy. This causes INFLATION and is BAD for the economy. It makes sense that the GM's would target gold-creating methods.
