Need SLI help!

hey all, i am building a new pc and decided to go sli. i have everything for my pc except video cards and psu. I never really found out what to look for in a video card so i am at a loss as to what to get. I just want 2 cards that will last me a good while but dont cost me an arm and a leg. pcie 2.0 x16 slot. any help will be appreciated.

these local pc shop prices are comparable with newegg, i just have to pay tax but get them same day
 
Get one good card, it will cost less and last just as long (then when you upgrade, you only need to throw one card in and you've lost less)

SLI is a gimmick and generally works best only when you have acres of money and nowhere else to throw it.
 
i agree with zorg here, i've had 2 different sli setups and wasn't satisfied with either of them. buggy, lots of games don't even utilize both cards. I've been running a GTX280 since they came out and couldn't be happier. I'm only about an hour away from a Newegg distro center so I get stuff from the next day anyway :)
 
thanks for the quick replys. Would either of you mind recomending a decent card from the abbove list? id like to get a sli supported card so when i upgrade in the near future, i can still use it like zorg said. And, id like to keep the price range from 150-200.
 
If your motherboard supports crossfire maybe go ati ... i was always an nvidia guy but when i upgraded my latest computer the guys at the store convinced me that the Ati 5700 series is alot better and cheaper than many nvidia cards. I bought a single ati 5770 which is in my desktop computer and i also have an ati mobility 5870 in my laptop. They are awesome and run every game i give it in ultra settings. Maybe look into those :D

hehe i herd the exact opposite. i had an ati few years ago and it crapped out on me. but ill take a look
 
lol :P yea thats why i was an nvidia guy at first lol but these ones are doing well so far haha... just an idea though :P something to look at
 
You'd be much better off with a x2 card (dual-gpu) than with sli/crossfire.

SLI/Crossfire only gets you around +30% performance, while doubling the costs. Not worth it.
 
well i'm still no fan of ati drivers (and never have been), but the new cards are indeed very nice.
i'd go with the: gtx 275 or the ATI 5770. both are good cards that should last you a couple of years.
 
I have been SLIn 2 9800GTX and have had no problems with either card or any games.. Works great and gives me a major boost in FPS in any game..

I recommend it to anyone who wants to use it..

9800GTs are cheap and work great in terms of power..

your looking at 100-120$ per 9800GT and those two cards will run any game atm great..

the last 20 or so nivida drivers have been increasing overall performance for SLi..

its not a gimmick nor is it buggy.. well atleast not for me.. and those 2in1gpus are Overpriced..

Yes, when i was looking to upgrade my Graphics card, i didn't know what to do, But I bought the GeForce 9800GT, and it was twice as better as my older one (GeForce 8600GTS).

I bought it for (i think) $115, and its a GREAT card. It is also available for SLI if you want to buy a second, but also remember, your Motherboard has to support it. IMHO its not worth it for SLI.

Problem there is that dual-gpu cards use sli (or crossfire, respectively) technology to power both GPUs (atleast on the software side). Same problems, same performance issues in suboptimal conditions
 
There is a known issue with SLI and WoW so I would strongly advice against it, get just a single card, ATI 5890, or nvidia 20 or 295 are good options
 
Idk why you people think SLi dosen't work with WoW or is buggy.. I get 40 more fps with SLi on in WoW.. Lol

also In the nvidia patch notes for like the last 20 drivers it has said..


  • Enhanced SLI support for Metro 2033, Supreme Commander 2, Unigine, and World of Warcraft
 
Dude, trust me, I BREATHE gaming tech support, SLI has issues with wow, yould be getting 50-60 fps, dont believe all the marketing propaganda...
 
SLI doesn't work correctly with WOW, full stop. Care to point to an article that shows it does thanks so we can all be corrected, I personally would love it to work.

The function is supported but no real advantage is netted form it unless the rest of the system is lacking. The game is much more CPU based than GPU based.

Performance is mixed when using SLI and if an issue occurs it might be best to run the game with a single card.

WoW doesn?t support 2 gpu?s (2 graphics cards), yet.
