Just saw an article about a large Earthquake in Christchurch, and I know you're from around there.

65 dead in devastating Christchurch quake | Stuff.co.nz

Just want to make sure you're ok so I don't need to fly down there and search for you.

If I don't hear from you in 24 hours I'm flying down to Kiwiland.

Alive. Wife and family alive also. House going to be demolished. Barely standing, most contents destroyed. No power, phones, water, likely for the next 5 days. Post more later if possible, intermittent use of iPhone.

If you guys need to fly out here and stay with me for a while, I got a big empty house and I can cook.

Spent all day trying to get water. Only a few aid stations giving out water, people queuing for 8 hours. Fortunately we had a friend with water, but they are 1.5 hours out of town. Had to spend 30 minutes in line at the Supermarket only to be told people are limited to a single loaf of bread and they have no bottled water.

I'm not able to collect my car yet, he'll, I don't even know if it's still intact. It was parked right in the city centre in the middle of it. Can't get into the city centre for another 3 days. They are still pulling out bodies and some survivors. We are basically surviving and doing what little we can to make life feel normal. It's extremely distressing to say the least.

We had a builder inspect the house this morning and they confirmed it will need to be demolished. The latest update on power being restored to our area is "likely to be 1-2+ weeks". We are trying to source a generator, but we are having to look up to 400Km away as there are none locally.

Water was restored last night, but it's undrinkable as they have confirmed sewage leakage - the water is a nice brown colour and has an unpleasant smell.

Today will be all a out finding more non-perishable food and drinking water.

One of my employees has a girlfriend in NZ. I'll send her an email to see if she can help supply anything.

Power came on last night for a few hours before we went to bed. When we woke up this morning it was disconnected again. Water is also disconnected again. It appears only half the street had water, in the process of trying to get running water for the entire street we no longer have any water.

Fortunately we have enough boiled water to last for a while. We've been able to recharge phones and other devices.

Its likely to be at least 2 weeks before I'll be able to collect my car - if its still intact - as they are only letting emergency services into the city centre. That is not expected to change anytime soon.

Structual engineers just came though, we are safe to live in the house there is no imminent danger of it falling down. But the outer brick walls will fall down at some point. The foundations have moved and a couple of piles have are destroyed but the house won't fall over. Short term we can live here, but its up to the insurrance company to decide what happens to the house. Its a massive job to repair it, they need to lift the house, move it and rebuild the foundations. Then they need to pull all the bricks off the house and do that over. Or they can simply demolish it. Either way, we'll be without a house at some point for 1 - 1.5 years.

There is no eta on the insurrance company visiting us.

i hope that the insurrance will take the full cost of the damage Mike
they must do it

That looks terrible! Hope you and your family are doing ok.

We now have water and power; water is still not safe to drink and the power frequently drops out. Our internet is appalling to say the least, 1.5kb transfer speeds. Shit, modem speed is faster :)

And I was gonna ask you to do some diagnostics about your mesh issue!

Hope you guys get back to 'normal' living soon, sorry to hear about your losses :(

Power and water have been off for the last 3 days. It came back on last night, our water is down to a trickle, barely enough to do anything with. Power is being shutoff each night from about 8pm. Basically things are still shit!

I just heard a frightning statistic on the new this morning; over 60% of the central city needs to be demolished.

Apoc, let me know what testing you need and how you want me to go about it. I'll get started once I have a stable internet connection.
