I mean if you check it in the adventure setting it will always empower. If you run out of gold it will empower the instant you get enough to empower. Always worked for me when I used to do solo GR spam.

Well without knowing that its kinda hard to guess that is your issue lol.
I personally use simple follow atm because autofollow doesn't invite half the time and loses the leader too much. Never had a single issue with simplefollow. Unless auto follow actually fixes those I can't help.
