Would selling gold be considered illegal?

Not true. They can seize all your assets, sue your pants off, claim restitution and then throw you in jail for tax evasion and fraud. The IRS doesn't mess around when it comes to getting their money.

Will this happen? Probably not, but taxes is something you can't avoid if you're making money.

Burn it to the ground! Stop the Fed!

In general: You cannot sell what you don't own and you don't own the gold ^^
You have it ingame but it is from Blizz. It's not physical so different laws apply to it ^^
The money however is very real and you should sent it all to me.

I want to add you should pay taxes because that can get you into trouble since it's just income.

Did you even read wth I wrote?
You cant tax illegal businesses. That's why there's no damn tax on prostitution or other illegal businesses. You got a different system to deal with those, it's called the justice system.

This has been a topic for 15 years ever since the market started with ForeverQuest.
You can try to avoid it by semantics, "Well you're not buying the gold hoho", You're hiring me as a "gold farming consult" and you reap the rewards...

In the end:
No you're not allowed to sell something you don't own.
It's not illegal to hire someone as a consult.

But we're not talking about an illegal business. There's nothing inherently illegal about selling wow gold.

And you think things like Organized Crime are a legal business? As someone else pointed out, look what they took gangsters like Al Capone down for...Tax evasion. They will always find a way to get what they feel is theirs.

Prostitution is not illegal everywhere, and gets taxed just like any other business btw.
