With the new expansion coming out relatively soon I'm wondering how the gold price will change with the launch. I haven't been around for a WoW expansion launch before and so I'm asking you guys, who probably have more experience, how you think the price will change. I asked a relatively reputable source and according to him/her the price will probably be double what it is at the moment (≈$0.50/k).

Thanks for your input.

From Classic until WoTLK the Gold price always felt. In the beginning of each addon Goldprice is raising for some time. There are no Bots the first 1-2 weeks, and everybody wants raw materials to skill his professions. that makes a shortage in rawmats, prices for them go thrue the sky. also goldprice raises cos stocks run out.
After 3-4 weeks the goldprice will drop again. how far is not predictable now. classic were 10 euro for 1k gold. that was an epic mount at that time. end of cataclysm we were at 0.50 Euro for 1k already. now in MoP we are at 0,30Euro/k.
Hopefully it will stay stable there.

those prices are bulksale prices. selling private will obiously give you more.

It will probably be like it always is.....jump really high for the first month or two then drop real low then even out.

Gold prices are just like real life gold prices. When there is no gold, prices are skyhigh, cus there is still a demand. When there is lots of gold, prices will drop since everyone wanting gold, already haz it. Predicting the future in any way is, as you may know, impossible. As many of the people around the forums already know, we had a small incident with the "chinese" people moving in on our turf. The socalled "Black Temple issue" - which made the gold prices drop for everyone. The reason im bringing this up is just to illustrate how fragile a market we are in on and also to let your imagination have some free space. Lets say the Black Temple issue wasnt about making money here and now, but to stack it up for the WoD release. It probably wasnt, but who knows? As others have already mentioned, the price for gold will rocketlaunch toward the sky just after a new release and then slowly fizzle out and go back to normal. The best advice to give, is stack up as much gold as you can while still covering your expenses. Don't sell all your gold cus you really want a new video game or a new playstation or a new car (depending what scale you are selling gold at) - sell the gold to cover your expenses, save the rest, hope for the best when the expansion comes out and maybe you will be able to make a really nice profit for the first couple of weeks. Good luck to us all.

Gold prices are just like real life gold prices. (...)

Thank you for the well thought out reply. I was thinking the same, stocking up and only selling enough to not go into the negatives seems to be the best idea until WoD launches. Hopefully it will bump up the prices to the $0.9-$1.0/k range.

Most likely gonna go up to 1 usd pr. k..
then drop down after the first week :)

atleast that's my experience..

.70k for the first 2 weeks. Then when Apoc gets HB all functioning correctly with the new expansion, back down to .30k

Stock up is the job!
well not really
there are to many people that do this method. I noticed that I got much more on demand buyers got 2-3 weeks before MoP lauched then 2-3 months before MOP

so maybe 1M for each server/faction you got is good enough and sell the rest on demand

WHen MoP released on my server, the prices went up to 1.3$/k
