Check it out. The game is basically a single player anymore. There is no AH, there is no way to make IRL money. The only reason to bot anymore, is to get super awesome equipment, so your bot can handle higher difficulty, and when you do play (yep, some of us actually play the game) you have good enough gear to hang out with your friends. Personally, I bot, because I like watching it do work. It's crazy how good they've gotten at these bots, and just interesting to see them work. Sure, at this time, in RoS, there is no reason to bot.
As I've said in WoW. The ONLY time Blizzard cares when you bot, is when you start affecting other players experiences. Such as flooding the AH, buying / selling gold, ect. I think the only time (and this is just backed up by just my ideas, and my experiences botting) they are going to care about botting in d3 again, is when they introduce the ladder system, because they aren't going to want to have to hear people complain that they can't compete with the bots on the ladder. That's really the only time I can see them giving a shit.
As to the OP's question, which has been asked, probably a million times. If you are too scared about losing your account, if it means that much to you, then DO NOT BOT. Sure many of us have gone a really long time without bans, but if I lost all my characters tomorrow, I'd be ok with it, I didn't like their names anyways. Plus, I'd just level more.
Rule of thumb for botting has always been, and will always be, don't bot if you don't want to lose it.
