There's an addon called WIM (wow instant messenger) It pops up a window when someone messages you, which is handy in multiple ways.

First, it lets you see the scammers trying to phish your info, since it pops their messages into their own window and lets you know right away that they are definitely NOT gm's (lol).

Second, the windows don't go away, so when you come back from your sleep session, work, or whatever else you are doing then you can actually read the messages you got. It also pops up with a sound in case you have your speakers on but are afk but in the same room, so you can hear when someone messages you as well. Very handy, IMO. It's a small addon and well worth it.

I do the same thing. Problem: If you wake up disconnected elephant restores your chat and you can read your missed messages.
