.NET and Java coder worked on simple web applications to enterprise java systems serving 30 thousand concurrent users blah blah blah

I work on authentication code for the enterprise app I am responsible for.

Might have been better off PMing or sending an e-mail to one of the big guys, and with a better introduction... a couple sentences won't get you a job coding for the buddy team.

He doesn't want a job in that sense, he justs wants to help out. If the buddy team does not want it then who cares, like he said he is just donating some time this weekend, not a permanent position.
