What's the big deal with paid versions anyways?

I am just curious what is the big deal about this? Don't all the devs make HB what it is? I mean seriously you people are so greedy. Would you work hours upon hours coding hundreds and hundreds of lines all for a bunch of ungrateful brats for free? Come on guys stop going on the crusade trying to get every dev that offers a paid for routine or profile punished. When's the last time you bought a xbox or playstation and got all the games free along with it? Yeah like I thought NEVER. You paid for the bot not EVERYTHING for it. Just like when you buy a console you pay for the CONSOLE NOT EVERY GAME THEY MAKE FOR IT! You guys are going to keep this crap up and all these great devs are going to jump ship and you will end up with NOTHING. See how much you bitch and cry then.

back in my day, the "great devs" didn't require you pay. we were a community, now everyone is here to get a piece, and thats fine. whatever, but we have rules. the main rule is your not allowed to Buy / Sell / Trade or Advertise on this forum. if we did allow buying and selling people would be scamming left and right, and every thread would be a WTB or WTS thread.

I'm sure back in your day there weren't so many whiny brats that thought they deserved everything in the world for free and at the exact moment they thought they needed it. I mean seriously look at all the free stuff out there. How many people even leave a compliment compared to the amount that use it? Not many at all. People think they are entitled to get what they want and bitch and cry if it has flaws. All the guys that I see that have a paid for version have free versions too. Their free versions are way better than most of what's out there. Why don't we show the devs some respect and at least give them a paid profile/routine section on the forums. That way no one can complain about a paid version. The leechers can sit in the free sections of the forums and the hard working devs can have a chance to earn a cup of coffee for their hard work. I mean why would you stop someone for getting money for their hard work? No one stops honorbuddy from getting paid for their hard work put into the bot.

I'm not trying to get anyone irritated or offended here I just think it isn't right for people to complain they don't get someone else's hard work free along with honorbuddy when the author isn't even employed by them. It would be like me buying a PC and filing lawsuit against blizzard for not giving me WoW for free. It just doesn't make sense.

Not for stuff that feels "required" or "My life's work" Hey, I accept that people have a donation button if freely and you think the product is awesome. But when people start making routines just to get the $$$$ is a blunt choice.

Quality isn't always paid, and this has been proven over and over again. Wulf kicking healing ass with Oracle, Me doing multiple free routines for raiders, nomnomnom doing warrior for raiders, these are just a few choices that people can choose from. Not because there isn't a "super awesome" routine that requires you to pay.

Kids that uses HB, maybe 1 out of 200 or 1 out of 500 might start looking at C# code and ask themselves "I want to learn this" then I have achieved something.

That's crap, you don't buy a car and expect a new stereo is going to be free just because "I already bought the car!".I can understand why bossland didn't want them selling directly from the forum, but not even a link to their site? That is just stupid, and now instead of people just finding and clicking a link, they have to PM the creator and get a link through that. Boom, same exact position, just a whole lot of wasted time.

I think it comes down to forum mods not wanting to play code police. When you get into selling profiles on this site you open up a whole new batch of disputes about devs using other devs' snippets of code and profiting off it without paying any royalties or getting permission. You also get into the whole who wrote what first debate. I see this as the biggest issue with having a paid profile section.

I have witnessed these same issues arise on the OC forums over paid PQR profiles and it creates flame wars and a huge mess to deal with for the mods.

The main issue with "paid routines" is that they are most likely in a .dll format and "encrypted". Thus not allowing people to see the "source code", which IS imo a very bad idea. They can have malware infected code inside of the dll very easily, or have copy pasted a lot of other's source code and claim it as their own. This is where I see the big issue with "paid routines", I'm pretty sure many have copied my rotations and claimed as their own in a "paid routine" I don't mind, but there's no credit because I can't see what's inside of that very .dll file. I know that a very specific person gives proper credit, in which i'm not going into.

I think the only way to make paid profiles work here is to make all code open source paid profile or not and ban any sort of DLL or encryption. Disallow full profile copies but allow borrowed code snippets. Then any paid or unpaid dev has no grounds for complaint. Don't like it then don't sell here type scenario. I'm not against paid profiles as i have donated/paid for some in the past but why shud the HB staff have to hire more mods just to police code disputes.

and if you allow the selling within the board, the board would be full with paid versions. Any "new" Member would only see the selled profiles / routines / plugins and would think the have to pay also for these.
Lets take a depper look to your example were the devs post a "free" Version and a "paid" version. The "free" version - even with 20 % less damage - is enough for most people. Most people just want to finish a job or doing lfr / bg / instances with this profil. It doesn't realy matter if it needs 20 % longer or doing less damage
If you use the profil for selling gold a 20 % time increase is a money decrease, thes people would buy the "pro" version. Thats okay because they want to earn money and they should have to pay the people who have spend so much money.

People who spend time and effort into one thing like the CC tend to make it a lot better then a team who has to fix way to many problems with there software. I donate more to the 3rd Party guys then what I have for the base software itself and it is worth it.
