What is Combat assist?

This is my first time using a program like this, can anyone explain how combat assist works and what it does exactly? I noticed if I turn it on and attack something it will go into a rotation. Is this all it does or is there more things it can do?

All it does is the combat rotation for you, you control all the movement.
