Are you using a plugin or something for the "suggested" part or are you just going off the lowest price in the AH at the time of listing?

I pretty much do the same thing you do. Small stuff go on GAH, big stuff go on RMAH. If my shit dont sell, I just keep lowering the price every once in a while. By the time they sell, I would have knocked about 5-10 dollars off the original price I put it up for but its still better than nothing.

I put all rares on AH starting at 10k bid. No buyout. Good legendaries/set pieces I'll put on RMAH - bad ones I'll just salvage for brimstone.
