I just have a couple questions. Exactly how does VPN work? I know it uses tunneling, but is that it? Also, does or has anyone used any of the free VPN softwares out there? I know to be skeptical of them, but it's worth a shot as I can't really afford to add any expenses related to WoW/HB. If I can find a way to squeeze something in, what low-cost VPN service would you guys recommend?

VPN sets up a secure connection across an insecure network. In other words, it encrypts and sends all of your traffic to a VPN server somewhere else in the world. That server decrypts the traffic and relays it for you. So any servers that you connect to do not see your IP they see the VPN server's IP. I am not familiar with any of the free VPN software out there, but because VPN requires a permanent server running on the other end as well as a good constant connection to the internet I would be wary of anything advertised as free. Especially since the owner of the VPN server can log and/or view all of the traffic you send to it.
