Travelling distance/time question

I have a question, might be a simple one, but if there was a lake/water/bay in the way of where i want to go, will it be better to travel around along the roads or straight through the water? Will niantic know which route i take so I wouldn't get flagged as traveling too fast? See picture for more details.

So far PF just walks through it, and we haven't had issues. That said some have asked about a more intelligent walking behavior, and that idea has been passed to Hatching recently for review. So maybe in the future we will have an official word about plans for that. Great question though, and I hope I was helpful for you.
