Trading Gems (Marquise +) ?

I know they're account bound.
But I heard talk of being able to trade them by socketting items and trading said item. Anybody know anything about this? I've tried it and can't do it the easy way; socket, drop, pickup-> doesn't work.
Is there more to it?
