hey, i dont share very much but (not that i have very much to share) but this weekend i had to take an unexpected trip to Carlsbad, NM and on the way back, we drove through Cloud croft and Alamogordo. i had my DSi on my so i decided to take some pictures since a lot of you guys have never been or white sands national monument. if theres more interest, ill retake the pictures (with a better camera) when i have to take another trip in about two weeks.
here's the pictures followed by a little text explaining what they are
So as your coming off the mountain from cloudcroft to Alamogordo you can get this awesome view of horizon and if you look at the base of the mountains you can see this white like, it almost looks like snow, but thats white sands, and from looking at it you can just see how massive the landing site for the gypsum is.
this is the view from the highway, you can see the plants growing in it just like it was normal sand, farther in its just white dunes, they film lots of movies and tv shows, mostly every time they need a barren desert scene since plants have a hard time growing in the white sand. the pilot episode for stargate universe is what first comes to mind, but since the sand is white, its easy just to toss a brown filter on the camera and turn it brown.
at this point this is where the sand comes closest to the highway, if you look at the right side and at the middle you can see the metal pole of the top of the fence, and when i was a kid the whole fence used to be visible at this point, but with the winds the landscape changes and more and more sand keeps building up.
This is a little farther forward from the last picture, you can see with all the footsteps that because its so close to the highway now, people tend to pull over every once in a while and play around instead of actually paying to get into the park.
anyway, i hope you enjoyed if you have any questions ill be glad to answer them as best as i can. but im not an expert. let me know if you guys like this kinda threads and ill take more pictures when i go again in two weeks.
have a good day.
