Spambot registrations and posts on this forum

Well, even though it seems fitting there's a bot for everything, also including but not limited to HB forum spambots.

There's a new piece of software released not too long ago that is capable of even reading those strange captcha's and mimic em or post the solution during registrations (they have about 5000 build in Captcha's, which is about everything currently available, and it's capable to read 95% of em as far as I remember reading on it).

As I suggested in another post (which was removed) it's maybe time that some preventive measurements are taken over here.
vBulletin has available spamfilters. Maybe time to put them to work?
Further there's a integration of Akismet possible which is as far as I know a very reliable and good spamcatcher.
And then there's ofcourse lots of other stuff you can do to prevent this kind of pollution on the forums.

I linked to it in the deleted post and will link it here again for reference : Dealing with vBulletin Spam | Forum Doc

This post is very clear on wha can be done (simply) against these lovely posters and bot registrations.

Thanks and Good Luck, Liquid.

im doing what i can to keep spam down, most of the time its just spammers who sign up, then wait for over 30 days then post, and thats what we've seen today, is 1 spammer who made a bunch of accounts and sat on them for month. its hard to catch everything but im doing what i can, more anti-spam measures have been considered and i assure you appropriate response will be taken.

Just curious by why would they have to wait 30 days? Are we not able to create threads until then? TBH I haven't tried, but also haven't ran into anything that I can not do, other than replying in a guide section lol.

they wait 30 days, because most tools wont allow automatic deletion for accounts that where created over 30 days ago.

Noticed the spam bots are getting smarter they can even draw now to get around some of the captcha designs...

If you look at the memberlist there are lots of user accounts with strange names, including leading special characters with 0 posts and all kind of registration times.
Can we do some kind of db cleanup for people that didnt buy hb , have no non-spam post and havent logged in for ages?

Proactive cleansing seems like a plan, if they have to tie emails of purchased accounts to forum registration then you can get rid of a lot of dodgy looking posters without infringing on people who have signed up to be a part of the forum community.

guys, dont worry about it, bossland knows about the issue, thats as much as i can do, just keep alerting him to the issues.

Just chill out people, a bit of spam isn't gonna kill anybody.
Mods will delete the posts as they see them and life will go on...

It's more like when the spam bots post NSFW images in threads created by legitmate posters that causes issues, I don't view threads that look distinctly spam bot generated.
For some people just the fact the images came up can cause serious issues for them.

As a marketer I've always wondered what their actual goal is. It can't get Google rating cause the posts are removed way too quickly for that. The only thing I can think of is that on some forums they aren't removed so they can score back links there... but other than that... no idea of what the benefit is. It's not like anyong is going to click on an obvious spam post - with nothing but gibberish language and a link...

well theres tons of boards that dont get used and get filled with spam, in those cases, yea they get there links bumped.

the only thing i can suggest is what ive been suggesting is, when you see spam, report the post.
