Retrieving a lost WoW account

I gave away my wow account over a year ago to a friend of mine when I quit playing. I am no longer in contact with him, but last I heard he either sold the account or gave it away to someone else. Is this account considered gone or is there a way to retrieve it?
 
Blizzard holds that an account is the property of the person whose name it's registered under. You could probably get it back.

Wondering what I would say to them, and also I tried to log into the account but the email address on it has been changed, so I'm guessing the name and other information has been changed also.. does this mean when they ask for my ID, nothing will match... or will the information of the original account holder (me) still be there somewhere?
 
You can't change an account's name. That sucks when you buy one, but that comes in handy when you need to retrieve one.

Just make up something like : "I got my account hacked a while ago and out of spite I just left WoW. Now I'd like to get back to it and I would like to know if there's a way to get my account back."

With any luck they will ask for a scan / photo of an ID + today's paper. Since your legit, it should be fine. Back in the days you could also provide the original CD key as a second means of verification.
Also, contact them via a ticket on their support site (https://eu.battle.net/support/en/ticket/submit or https://us.battle.net/support/en/ticket/submit), not by phone (since the phone support actually just throws a ticket at the actual one).

It worked out perfectly. They replied to my ticket asking that I call to verify some information.. so I did. They asked simple questions of my account, like security question, address etc all of which I was able to answer correctly. I got my account back after 10 minutes of talking to them. It seems all my characters have been deleted, though ;(

Open up a ticket about your characters, they can usually get them back without a problem. Now gear might be an issue to get back, but the toons can usually come back.

The account is frozen. Do characters on the account show up even if it is frozen? If I remember correctly, they do, but it says "no characters were found".
 
Yes they do show up. So just open a ticket under your account, and tell them the name, race, classes etc. Should get them back hopefully by the latest.. a week.

They are saying that a GM will contact me via email. It turns out that my main was transferred to another account and all my others were deleted. Sounds like they will be able to transfer it back and reactivate my alts :D Luckily the account has been inactive since 2011 so I can SoR myself. Do the 7 days free gametime count as a "trial" period, or can you get RAF gametime while under those free SoR 7 days?

Lol? So basically it's OKAY to steal accounts and transfer toons because the owner can't do anything about it. That's plain silly. The woman on the phone @ account support told me that I would be able to get my character back once a GM is available to track it down. Liars.

It took a lot of complaining but one GM finally got my characters back, including my transferred main.

"Hi there!

My name is Game Master V------n! I got your ticket here about your compromised account. I was hoping to catch you online however we seemed to have missed each other. I want thank you for your patience and understanding during your wait.

After some in depth research we were able to get the character back on the account. :D

On that note, it's my personal goal to ensure that you feel like the valued customer you truly are, so hopefully this info proved helpful to you. Thank you for taking the time to read my response and again, thank you for your patience with the wait tonight. Take care and be safe in your travels! <3 "
