Realm-hopping to a low pop realm possible?

Hi!
Playing on a high-pop server has some downsides, the crowded farming spot are one of them.
I was gonna try and realm-hop to a low pop server thru the invite RealID friend from a low pop server and by the miracle of cross-realm zoning was gonna end up on the low pop server.
Not way i got it to work as i wanted.
We always ended up on my mains server, the crowded one.
Tried diffrent zones, diffrent toons, diffrent levels on toons and some servers on a diffrent language aswell.

Anyone knows if its still possible to get to a low pop server? or did blizzard "fix" that now?
