RealID

The name is good but the adress and phone number is wrong, theres another guy with that name

Yo, this is the story all about how
My Real ID made some $%@* go down
I'd like to take a moment
Just listen to me
And I'll tell you all about how Blizzard took my privacy

In West Elwynn Forest, born and raised
Adventuring is how I spent most of my days
Questing, grouping, crafting my gear
Grinding Ashen Verdict up to Revered
When a guy named Bobby Kotick
Who was up to no good
Did something that not a single person understood
He showed up on the forums, told us we'd use our real names
And said "Now everyone who googles you will know you play our game."

I whistled for a blue and when he came near
He said they'd been planning Real ID for over a year
I said I didn't think getting tracked down would be funny
But he said "NAW FORGET IT, YO HOLMES IT'S MORE MONEY"

I went to account management and canceled my pay
And I yelled to Bobby Kotick, "Yo holmes, smell ya later,"
I looked back at Azeroth, devoid of security
And thought 'Goodbye, WoW
I think I'll keep my obscurity.'

There's already a discussion going on about it on the forums

And just a comment...all the information that he posted on the Blizzard person is all public. All that information is available on most people to anyone who wants to look you up. So the question is why are people so afraid of other WoW players? Like I said in my other post you give out all this information to people in stores and restaurants all the time. I can't count the number of times I've looked up people on Facebook, Linkedin, MySpace, ect...just because I was curious to see a glimpse of their personal life. I can only see what they present to the world, some people have more than others. Regardless this had nothing to do with WoW, RealID, or anything other than they introduced themselves.

People with a tiny bit of knowledge of the internet are trying to scare people under rocks because the "internet is a bad place filled with bad people", its not. Its filled with lots and lots of normal people doing normal things. Just like in the real world there are criminals who take advantage of some people. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't leave your house or you need to wear a disguise every time you leave your house. No you make good decisions and decide what level of exposure you want to have. As with this change you have to make the same choice, the difference is Blizzard is telling you up front that level of exposure for posting on the forums. Its still up to you on whether you are going to post or not.

Because of a thousand reasons. I don't want a future employer googling my name and coming back with 5000 posts of me posting spreadsheets and math and flames about a game and having that affect my chances at getting a job. Not to mention some people work in fields where their public information needs to be at a minimum for safety reasons. I absolutely will never post again on the WoW forums if this change goes live.

You severely underestimate the amount of creeps that exist on Battle.net as a whole. I've seen dozens of cases where if someone knew a real name and could pull up public info, a crime would likely have resulted. Blizzard is irresponsible for facilitating that. Just because 99% of the people on Battle.net are normal, doesn't mean there still aren't 1% that aren't right in the head. Provoke them the wrong way and all of a sudden your public info is being plastered across 4chan or some shit. You can take that chance, but I sure as hell aren't.

Blue post and link http://blue.mmo-champion.com/t/25968987278/regarding-real-names-in-forums/

Hello everyone,

I'd like to take some time to speak with all of you regarding our desire to make the Blizzard forums a better place for players to discuss our games. We've been constantly monitoring the feedback you've given us, as well as internally discussing your concerns about the use of real names on our forums. As a result of those discussions, we've decided at this time that real names will not be required for posting on official Blizzard forums.

It's important to note that we still remain committed to improving our forums. Our efforts are driven 100% by the desire to find ways to make our community areas more welcoming for players and encourage more constructive conversations about our games. We will still move forward with new forum features such as conversation threading, the ability to rate posts up or down, improved search functionality, and more. However, when we launch the new StarCraft II forums that include these new features, you will be posting by your StarCraft II Battle.net character name + character code, not your real name. The upgraded World of Warcraft forums with these new features will launch close to the release of Cataclysm, and also will not require your real name.

I want to make sure it's clear that our plans for the forums are completely separate from our plans for the optional in-game Real ID system now live with World of Warcraft and launching soon with StarCraft II. We believe that the powerful communications functionality enabled by Real ID, such as cross-game and cross-realm chat, make Battle.net a great place for players to stay connected to real-life friends and family while playing Blizzard games. And of course, you'll still be able to keep your relationships at the anonymous, character level if you so choose when you communicate with other players in game. Over time, we will continue to evolve Real ID on Battle.net to add new and exciting functionality within our games for players who decide to use the feature.

In closing, I want to point out that our connection with our community has always been and will always be extremely important to us. We strongly believe that Every Voice Matters, ( http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/about/mission.html ) and we feel fortunate to have a community that cares so passionately about our games. We will always appreciate the feedback and support of our players, which has been a key to Blizzard's success from the beginning.

Oh good, so they aren't going through with it.

I didn't think they would.

This is God.

The fact that Blizzard even thought of this idea makes me wonder what is really going through their minds. :S

I am seriously surprised they are backtracking on this...

Doesn't matter to me one way or the other...I was just pointing out the reasons why it wasn't such a bad idea.

After a 700 page thread on EU and (last time I checked, over 2600) page thread on US I don't really see what's surprising.

Because Blizzard is usually pretty good about hashing out these ideas behind the scenes well before even remotely talking about them in public. So they are usually pretty solid with their announcements of major changes like this. They must have gotten some serious pressure to decide to back pedal like this.

Like a 700 page thread on EU and a 2600 page thread on US? I'd call that serious pressure.
