Random computer problem

Bought a laptop for a family friend a few weeks ago. Was only $400 brand new off newegg.

4GB RAM
500GB HD
i3
Lenovo

He gives it back to me today asking whats wrong with it.

It is getting stuck on "Preparing to configure Windows. Do Not Turn Off Your Computer." It is Windows 8 btw.

I turn it off, goes back to same message. I can't access anything. No Bios, no boot options, nothing.

Did not come with a disk and don't feel like sending it back. What in the world can it be?
