We know nothing yet, and I've seen people post the automated reply from Niantic's appeal system. What if the issue you're experiencing has nothing at all to do with bans? You've just gotten Niantic to investigate your account for no reason. No good. So, unless you have received a message explicitly stating that your account has been banned, DO NOT submit a ban appeal.

I doubt they are waiting for people to submit appeals intentionally to ban them. However, if you are dumb enough to submit one without notification of a ban from them, then that's on you. It would explain how people got banned in the first place.

Oh yeah I know they're not waiting for people to do that intentionally to ban them. But if you submit an appeal, and you turn out not to be banned, and you have botted, they will investigate your account and notice you've been botting.

It's like walking up to a police officer on the sidewalk and saying to him "Hey, there's not a dead body in my house." and walking away. He's probably gonna be a bit suspicious.
