Profile/SubProfile Help.

Hey Guys, I am planning on making my own profiles for safety and just for learning it.
Something I don't understand is... What's a sub profile? I've seen profiles have more than one.
Is it like SubProfile 1 is where you go for 20-22 and then when your character hits level 22, it goes to sub profile 2 where it levels 22-24? And so on...

If you could clarify that'd be great.
