Professions? is herb really needed?

so here's my thinking:

Mining --> Transmute --> jewelcrafting --> DE

whats herbalism actually used for in this cycle?

in all the profession threads i see, this is what people say to do, and they also say to have herb?

why is herb needed in that cycle?

It is not needed for that specific cycle you mentioned. But herb IS needed if you make flasks, any form of inscription, potions, etc. The cycle you mentioned is strictly for mining. Herbing has its own cycles/uses.

Not in that cycle, but if I was doing that cycle Id diversify a bit into Xmuting carnelians into inferno ruby's requiring Heartblossom. or sell raw. meh.
