I was lvling my battlechest account (with cata trial) to lvl 80 and went for JC, however - it wont let me go past 525, do I need to buy panda expansion to get the 600 ??

The only thing trial does is 10 days free and you can explore cata areas, but you cant lvl more than 80 or someting like that.
