u can probably run everything very comofortably on 800 or less.
for a motherboard it depends on if u want amd (more budget) or intel (better performance), for intel they have socket 1155 (best for hackintoshes.. especially gigabyte), 1156, or 1366.
The motherboard prices are similar, where the prices range is 150-200.
the cpu however is where the price difference comes in...
1155 (sandy bridge) is anywhere from 100-300 dollars or 500-600 for the top end i7 ... prices are similar for 1156
the other socket choice (1366) isnt really a choice i would suggest.
They do have lga2011 now, but the extreme processor is like 1000 dollars...
you can get a really nice card for todays standards for a few hundred dollars, which tend to be the best bang for your buck, and have lasted me years typically.
here is a chart of high end graphics cards and their prices
PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmarks - High End Video Cards
for me 2 gtx 480's is the price of a high end radeon card or even the gtx 580/680..
I have seen newegg have the 480's as little as 180 or 190...
with this rig you would need a decent power supply I can only vouch for what i have, and I have had this running non stop for a few years and it worked great when I upgraded to a i7
Newegg.com - OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Modular High Performance Power Supply compatible with Intel Sandybridge Core i3 i5 i7 and AMD Phenom Its 90 dollars, but its 700w and is capable of running even 2 480's (sandy bridge psu) and is sli or crossfire compatible.
I know with memory it doesnt really make much sense to go past ddr3 1333 because it is basically bottle necked after that
if you get a socket 1366 then you can get triple channel memory, no benefits that I see too much (currently on one of my computers) and you can get 16gb for a little over 100 dollars, cheaper if you are lucky.
as far as the rest goes, its up to you... do you want a lot of hd space? do you want a ssd? do you want hdmi, stereo surround... blah blah...
most high end video cards come with hdmi nowadays, some mobos have it integrated... some mobos have usb 3.0 (most nowadays)
sata3 is out now, so if you want to take advantage, you would need to make sure your hd is compatible...
do you have a copy of windows? most people do have a copy of windows (key) from old computers licenses etc... if not, take into consideration if you want windows 8 when it comes out, unlike apples 30 dollar upgrade of a major os, that is how windows makes their money since they dont make you buy hardware from them
Even though I wish that windows would setup a rig and have flawless drivers and everything for their system.... that would be nice
Also cases vary in range, but a simple search on tiger or newegg =, sorting by price and reviews, you can find a high quality affordable unit.
Good luck man!
After re-reading your post, i am wondering if you meant a whole unit... if that is the case, I would say.... "NO!"
build yourself a computer..
they basically make it like putting together lego's nowadays (for simplicity sake) and most of the well known manufacturers have pretty good directions
