Need help with a new PC

Hey folks

My old computer is pretty much dying (running wow on lowest gfx, in raids - i have 16 fps)
So it's getting hard to produce CCs that i know work 100 % because when i test them it won't perform as good as i'd want them to

My old PC is pretty much 6-7 years old
I can't say 100 % what's in the computer as it was a pre-build Dell computer (got quite a good deal on it through my old company)

What i can say is that is has:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2,40 GHz
GFX: Nvidia Gefore 8800 GT
Ram: 3GB (Can't tell you shit about them, as i have no idea what type it is)

Now that wasn't a lot of information :D

So what i've been looking at, is a computer with the following specs (also a pre-build computer as i haven't created a computer for like 9 years or so)

Quite a bit of cash for those specs. Worth heading to reddit.com/r/buildapc There are tips and guides to EASILY build a much better PC yourself for the same or less money.

The real problem is chosing the parts, i've got no experience in this these days whatsoever :D

- You might want to add a CPU to that setup, it currently doesn't have one.
- If you want cheap then ditch the cooler and get a boxed CPU. The boxed coolers are good enough
- If you want cheap then ditch the HD6950 graphics card. a HD6770 or HD7670 will be more then enough for anything you want to do and is probably about half the price or less.
- I'm not sure if that last item is a discreet soundcard but if so: ditch it. Motherboard integrated graphics are more then enough.

- All together I got it for less then $800 (612 Euro) although I did go cheap for the video card... you can do considerably better there. I run Wow at full Ultra at 60FPS other then 'downtown Org' - and there it's 45-50fps.

I also went cheap on the Hard drive (5400 rpm) cause for me, it's only going to be storage and non-high speed programs, I'll be buying a 128gb SSD soon.

My advice would be to avoid the AMD cpus for now because frankly, they just don't compete against Intel right now. Do yourself a favor and pick up the Intel i5-2500k and an accompanying motherboard (Asus P8P67 Pro is generally a good choice). Cant't link to it right now though since I'm on my phone.

For the video card, AMD is releasing their 7800 series next week so it might be a good idea to wait for that. For the RAM, I recommend the G.Skill Ripjaw X series because they've worked well for me and my friends. I don't have a lot of recommendations for hard drives since the prices shot up but if you want to spend the money, the Samsung HD103SJ is a good 1TB drive (make sure you get a 7200 rpm drive).

That depends on if you really like overpaying for that speed - like buying a Mac over a 'PC'. The FX-8150 set a new world's record for the highest overclocked CPU at about 8Ghz if I remember correctly. The 8120 that I got will overclock to the mid 4ghz range although I'm just running it at native 3.1ghz right now -and as cool as can be with the CPU fan that's included - yes, the cooling unit is included at the $189 CPU price. And what's the price for the Intel? ;)

*edit* that world record was done in a liquid helium tank of course... NOT with stock cooling!

Yes, you pay more for the Intel CPU but for good reason. At the same clock speeds, the Intel CPU will beat the AMD CPU at just about anything you throw at it. The Bulldozer architecture is sub-par compared to Sandy Bridge and the lack of competition is one of the reasons Ivy Bridge has been delayed so long. Read around on the internet and you will see that just about everyone supports buying Intel for any computer above $500. Also, I've got my 2500k clocked at 4.4GHz without any fine tuning or anything and it runs as cool as can be.

+1 to the 2500k (if you dont plan to OC you can knock it down to the regular 2500)

If you plan to OC get the Hyper 212+

6950 GFX is over kill for WoW but it would last you until maybe the next 2 expansion im guessing. If your looking to save money get the 560 Ti (WoW favors NVIDA)

Mother board get a P67 or a Z68 (IMO Z68 with an SSD makes WoW load way faster!)


Side Note:

Im currently running WoW with a AMD 955BE at a max of 60 FPS which is good enough for me, not even OC'ed. MY GFX card is a single 460, with a 560 Ti you would be getting in the 100s i do believe but the question is do you really need it to be that fast?
 
Meh i guess i don't need it, but would be nice to be able to run other things than wow as well :D

So i changed around a bit and what i fear, from trying to make my own PC is that the items does not match together :D

This is what i've come up with if i am to build my own (i've tried making sure everything works together) using a Danish website that gives you the cheapest prices

Not saying that this is what i would roll with, but i'm trying to look at what i would find best

Motherboard: MSI 990XA-GD55
CPU: FX Black Edition FX-6200 8 MB (6 cores, 3.8 GHz. Money saver)
Kingston HyperX blu 2 x 4 GB (1600 MHz)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500 GB
GFX: Club 3D Radeon HD6950 (2 GB)
Power Supply: LC Power Super Silent LC6550 V2.2 (550 Watts)
DVD-reader: Pioneer DVR 219LBK
Cabinet: Cooler Master Elite 310
SSD: OCZ Petrol Solid State Disk 128 GB

Price: 1173 USD or 898 Euro.

Now i could probably go lower (but let's face it, i got no idea what any of this stuff actually is - else i wouldn't be asking some kind of help)
I guess i need a cooler too for the CPU (can't rly decode if there's one with the CPU) and i haven't added any cables as i know nothing about what would be needed from this.

Let's look aside from the fact that the computer can run WoW fine (WoW isn't the only game out there), is this completely wrong?

Even I would acknowledge in a environment where the PC is being loaded, like running multiple bots or playing Crysis, then using a high end Intel chip would make a difference, but if you are looking to get the most 'bang for your buck', then you are talking AMD. Again, I will reference the PassMark High end CPU chart, look at the AMD prices compared to the Intel prices at each performance level:

The AMD are less expensive at each level of performance.

Now if I hit the lotto tomorrow and have a blank check to write, am I going to get an Intel based CPU? Abso-F'ing-lutely! ;)

I would also like to mention that this is more of a general usage benchmark. If you want the best [gaming] bang for your buck, Intel is still the way to go. Take a look at the following Gaming CPU Hierarchy from Tom's Hardware:

If you take a look at it, you will see that any i5 and up is two tiers above the AMD that he listed. Hell, even the i3 processors are a tier above the AMD CPU (and his current processor is only 1 tier below the AMD processor). To be completely honest, if you are just going to play WoW and do general usage tasks on it (browsing, typing papers, etc.) then you probably aren't going to see much of a difference between any of the Intel processors or any of the AMD processors that we are debating here. However, if you want to squeeze all the gaming performance out of it that you can, I still have to recommend either an i3 or an i5. Give me your decision on the CPU and I'll throw together a build for you.
 
I'm not going to continue a tit-for-tat debate, but all of these charts don't take into effect any of the advanced features you can do with the CPUs. I don't know if the Intel's can do this, but I know I can shut down 4 of the 8 cores in the 8120 and jump from 3.1 to 3.9Ghz and that's not even considered overclocking it yet.

Again, we've given you alot of info and pretty charts - in the end, it's up to you. I like the lower price because in my case, I bought 3 of them. (One for me, one for my Wife and and one for my son...) Bang for the buck was very important as there was no way I could spend $1k on each machine!
 
you need at least a 650w power supply for that 6950 card; I had a 550w and it couldn't handle it
 
Also, it's worth mentioning that the 6950 may to be hard to acquire. There is currently no supply of these at all in the US (can't pick any of them up at newegg) due to the Radeon 7000 series. The release date for the 7850 (estimated around $249) and the 7870 (estimated around $349) is supposed to be next Monday (March 19th) and it [should] outperform everything at those price points. Kepler is also supposed to be released soon although their is no certain date for that and the first Kepler GPUs that are released will probably be above your price point anyways.

From what i can read there's been a post like back in start of march about the release?

They've sent out cards for places like Tom's Hardware to review but they haven't put them on sale yet. Also, I'm pretty sure that you don't need PCI-E 3.0 but if you do, it doesn't really cost that much extra.
