Is there any increased risk in botting in high population servers? I've always played medium, but I'm thinking of switching over. I'd imagine there are more bots running around on high pop, as well as random people herbing/etc so I'm not sure it's a good choice.

More population = higher chance of being reported, so ofc in theory the chance is higher, but aslong as your smart about your botting you'll still be fine. Personally ive only botted high pop servers and ive only had one ban ever, and that was back during tbc when glider got detected.

But beware, as you say yourself higher pop server means hellofalot more botters which means more competition, and considering the ammount of botters who report their fellow botters to lower competition thats certainly a risk increaser. I myself cant say alot about this since ive stopped botting for gold a long time ago, these days i only bot to lvl toons and offer powerlvling to friends and guildies

It only takes 1 person to report you. On a high pop server there may be more people around but there also will be more people to buy on the auction house. I say just bot safe and dont worry about the server pop

It's a 2 way street. A busy server means people come and go all the time, less likely to notice people farming random shit all day long, and high pop servers tend to have a LOT of legit farmers manually gathering, so you kinda blend into the crowd.

if you using Windows 7 you can get a lil gadget that tells ya the pop on the servers you select. I always have mine up so I know if its low, medium or high pop... but I usually use an addon from curse called ShutUp, so ya can block messages from other players asking for help or goldsellers and send an automated reply that you select. Usually I have something like "Sorry I dont wanna help with CoC atm Im trying to get leather for my bloodied set" if Im in twilight. Just looks like ya dont wanna be bothered then...

Random asks: Hey you are a dwarf how come you didnt pick gnome?
You reply: "Sorry I dont wanna help with CoC atm Im trying to get leather for my bloodied set"

i would say it is 10 times better to be an evil bastard that just ignores people then be a botish typ with clearly automated answears.
