Minimize window - Not the same as keeping window on background?

This night the d3 window was minimized and when i checked it in the morning it was just idle there at the "resume quest" screen, with no progress since the moment i went to sleep.

Im wondering if minimizing window isnt the same as keeping the window on the background, since this happens to me a lot of times

Correct that it is NOT the same. Do not minimize it, just keep it in the background.
