internet dc's make the system halt

Running multiple clients on a machine and a disconnect from the internet freezes the system. What can be done not to make the system halt?

Yeah...It's been around for a LONG time now.
HB's cpu usage rockets up after the connection drops, causing all of the HB instances to max out my quad core cpu =<

Not sure if there anything that can be done on the user side =/
